Leupold VX-3i & VX-3i LRP Riflescope Review

The Leupold VX-3i riflescope is one of Leupold’s most popular hunting and long-range optics on the market. The key features that have driven the success of the VX-3i are the great optical performance, its rugged construction, and an affordable price point. In this article, we will review all of the features of the VX-3i, as well as feature some information that some of our staff has quantified while field testing these scopes. This Leupold scope is offered in a multitude of configurations, and we will cover the standard VX-3i for hunting applications and the VX-3i LRP for more tactical and competition applications.

One of the features that Leupold has been known for over the years is high-quality glass. The highly refined optical lenses in the VX-3i provide the shooter with unmatched picture clarity, sharpness, and brightness; allowing for a crystal clear and well-illuminated sight picture. Each lens is meticulously designed to maximize light transmission and reduce optical anomalies that can be found in other scope lenses. The VX-3i exterior lenses are treated with a scratch and dust/water resistant coating to increase the durability and clarity of the lenses. The interior lenses have also been treated with a specialized coating to increase the light transmission of each lens, allowing the maximum amount of light to reach your eye, creating ultra-bright and clear images while looking through the scope. These coatings and specialized optical lenses come together to create what Leupold calls the Twilight Max Light Management System. This system ensures the maximum low-light performance out of the scope which is critically important for hunters in the early morning and late afternoon when game is most active and natural light is low.

In addition to the high-quality optical lenses, the Leupold VX-3i comes equipped with a set of features that will suit every style of shooter. The VX-3i is offered in magnification ranging from 1.5-5x20mm up to 6.5-20x50mm. Leupold also offers the VX-3i in either 1 inch or 30mm scope tubes, depending on desired adjustment range. For the shooters focused on long range, the Leupold VX-3i LRP (Long Range Precision) model is the way to go. Leupold added 30mm tubes, side parallax adjustment, integrated throw lever on the magnification ring, large tactically inspired elevation adjustment knob, and larger magnification options. Both VX-3i models can accept the Leupold CDS (Custom Dial System). This Custom Dial System allows the use of a specific turret cut which matches the exact load that is being used, featuring yardages for quick adjustment. This can be extremely efficient for hunting or target shooting, as you can quickly range your target, and then dial the exact yardage on the scope.

All of the great features mentioned above are complemented by an extremely durable and resilient aircraft grade aluminum housing. The VX-3i is strong and dependable while being lightweight, allowing greater comfort and mobility in the field. Since the beginning, Leupold scopes have featured a lifetime warranty against any failures, although Leupold believes in making a high-end scope that should rarely have to use the warranty at all. Every component apart from the glass of the Leupold VX-3i riflescope is manufactured at Leupold’s facility near Beaverton, Oregon! In 2018, our Ochocos.com team made a trip to the factory and was able to observe the scopes being manufactured and tested. This experience solidified our view of Leupold’s high-quality craftsmanship and care for the optics industry.

We have included some reviews from our staff members below, who have used the VX-3i scopes in hunting and target scenarios:

“I run the Leupold VX-3i LRP riflescope on my Winchester Model 70 300 WinMag. I have been extremely pleased with the performance over a variety of distances. Using the Leupold VX-3i LRP riflescope in combination with my rifle has produced sub 1” groups at 100 yards and 1-1 ½” groups at 200 yards. This gives me great confidence when out in the field pursuing elk, my favorite big game animal. To test the scope further within practical hunting ranges, I ran the scope out to 375 yards, and as anticipated, I was able to hit 2-2 ½” groups very easily. What really strikes me about the VX-3i LRP is how clear and bright the glass is when shooting on rainy dark days. In the Northeastern Oregon mountains, I had no issues seeing the target at any of the previously mentioned distances. Additionally, when shooting on very bright sunny days I was pleased with how the scope managed glare. Even while shooting towards the sun, I was still able to clearly identify and accurately hit my target. When it comes to the operation of the scope, the magnification dial is very ergonomic and easy to adjust, as are the standard MOA turrets and side parallax adjustment knobs that come with the scope. Without having to bring my head up away from the scope, I can easily make adjustments while still keeping my eye on the target through the scope. This is a great asset especially when out in the field dialing in on real game.” - Hunter Reddington

“I use the VX-3i LRP 6.5-20x56 on my custom ultralight hunting rifle. So far, I have been very impressed with this scope, while using the WindPlex Reticle. The scope tracks perfectly, is very light, to match my gun, and the higher magnification really helps with long-range shooting. Many lesser scopes will have the clarity fade at higher magnification, but this scope is still crystal clear at 20x. I’ve put this scope against others at the same price point and I can say with certainty that the low light performance of the VX-3i has won every time. For hunting applications, I would generally recommend the non-LRP version for our customers, but the LRP has suited me well in hunting scenarios so far.” - Brad Watts
